When Lou Donaldson emerged in the early 1950s, virtually every aspiring young jazz alto-saxophonist was trying to emulate Charlie Parker's sound. While Bird remained an acknowledged influence, Lou Donaldson had his own approach to playing jazz, and he quickly became recognized for his bluesy, soulful feel, so much so that he was nicknamed "Sweet Lou."

Donaldson could play bebop at stratospheric levels but he also loved to caress ballads and to dig deep in the blues. Lou Takes Off from 1957 matches Donaldson with other young greats including trumpeter Donald Byrd, trombonist Curtis Fuller and pianist Sonny Clark for a pair of bop standards and two originals including the lowdown blues "Strolling In."

All of the musicians on Lou Takes Off would have significant solo careers of their own. It is fascinating to hear them at this early stage, especially the already brilliant Lou Donaldson, who shows his astonishing ability to infuse every note played with blues, soul and yes, sweetness.
