The third album from Joe Lovano's trio Tapestry shows the group continuing to expand its expansive and lyrical approach with deep listening and intense focus. "Our Daily Bread is driven by the rhythmic spirit of expression that projects the mysterious world of music that lies ahead," Lovano says in his accompanying text, "and these elegantly flowing pieces and free-floating ballads do indeed feel like songs of the soul.
'The intensity comes not from ferocity but from depth of feeling,' BBC Music Magazine wrote of the group's debut. 'Lovano's themes and harmonies offer rich potential, which the trio exploits beautifully, exploring textures and moods as fruitfully as they develop melodies and harmonies.'
Marilyn Crispell is the ideal pianist for this music, orchestrating it with a sensitivity attuned to both contemporary chamber music and the world of improvisation. Percussionist Carmen Castaldi, with whom Lovano has collaborated since his teenage years, enhances the music with his own poetic touch on the cymbals and, like Joe himself, elicits flourishing resonances from the gongs. At the heart of the program, Lovano presents the bluesy 'One for Charlie' as a solo tenor tribute to Charlie Haden, attaching special meaning to each note as the piece's dedicatee once did.
