REVIEWS:

DOWN BEAT original review: The World of Cecil Taylor
“Whatever else one may think of Taylor, it would be hard to deny that his playing conveys an immense, upsetting sense of urgency –much the same as could be said of Ornette Coleman, I suppose– and it was this immediacy which first convinced me that what Taylor is attempting is both genuine and valid. Listen carefully to this album. Whether or not your conclusions agree with mine, I think that you will find the time well spent.” (Frank Kofsky)
ALL MUSIC GUIDE (Printed edition, 2002)
“This is a wonderful document from early in Taylor’s career, when he was midway between modernist approaches to standard material and his own radical experiments that would come to full fruition a few years hence. A classic recording that belongs in anyone’s collection.” (Brian Olewnick)

PENGUIN GUIDE TO JAZZ
“The 1961 recordings for Candid –some of them under the nominal leadership of Neidlinger– secure a final balance between Taylor’s insistent unshackling of familiar organization and his interest in standards material. The original records are The World of Cecil Taylor and New York City R&B, but the various out-takes are equally revealing.”(Richard Cook & Brian Morton)
