Woody Herman's first band became known for its orchestrations of the blues and was sometimes billed as 'The Band That Plays the Blues'.
It included such noteworthy figures as Bill Harris, Sonny Berman, Pete Candoli, Billy Bauer (later replaced by Chuck Wayne), Ralph Burns, Dave Tough and Flip Phillips.
Herman's other bands include the Second Herd (1947-1949), the Third Herd (1950-1956) and various editions of the New Thundering (from 1959 to 1987, the year of Herman's death). Among the musicians that formed part of those bands were Zoot Sims, Herbie Steward, Serge Chaloff, Stan Getz, Al Cohn, Gene Ammons, Lou Levy, Oscar Pettiford, Terry Gibbs and Shelly Manne.
Two of Herman's greatest hits were "Early Autumn," and "The Goof and I". This release consists of the complete contents of the Woody Herman LP Woody Herman '58 appearing here on CD for the first time ever.
