Although trumpeter Howard McGhee (1918-1987) is a nearly forgotten jazz figure today, he was a highly influential musician in his time, playing and recording multiple dates as a leader with the likes of Charlie Parker. Teddy Edwards, and Sonny Criss, among many others. This new UPTOWN release presents a collection of rare small group broadcasts in excellent sound quality dating from McGhee's most glorious bebop years and is a true feast for the ears. Most of the well known Mosaic box containing the legendary Dean Benedetti recordings of Charlie Parker, consisted of materials recorded during this period while Bird was sitting with McGhee's band. But on those sets, Benedetti stopped the recording machine when everyone but Bird was soloing. This wonderful Uptown release allows us to appreciate the musical context in which those sets were played, showcasing amazing solos by McGhee backed on many tracks by the great Hampton Hawes on piano. Not to miss.
