After the release of his NRG Ensemble's first recording (NES 21) the Chicago musical alchemist Hal Russell wanted to do something different. For this project, recorded in 1982, he selected compositions from each of the band members (including former/future member Mars Williams) and he added Charles Tyler on baritone, alto and clarinet. As an Albert Ayler alum, Tyler was an easy choice to augment the Ensemble. Two previously unpublished performances by the NRG Ensemble from 1981 have been added. Author John Litweiler has contributed a new note to accompany his original.
