41 selections on 5 LPs box set.

After his death, pianist/teacher Lennie Tristano was paid tribute to at a lavish Town Hall concert. This five-LP set has all of the music, plus a seven-minute drum solo recorded by Max Roach a year later. Many of Tristano's top students (although not Lee Konitz) are heard from including pianists Liz Gorrill, Lloyd Lifton, Virg Dzurinko, Sal Mosca and Connie Crothers, the solo guitar of Larry Meyer, unaccompanied flute performances by both Fran Canisius and Nomi Rosen, a set from tenor sax Lenny Popkin, and six a cappella vocals from Lynn Anderson. Lennie Tristano was worshipped as a guru by some of these players (which sometimes results in overly precious performances) but in general the music is pretty rewarding. Not too surprisingly tenor-saxophonist Warne Marsh (with a pianoless trio) and singer Sheila Jordan emerge as the solo stars.- Scott Yanow
