The 1959 LP Jamal at the Penthouse (Argo LP646) marked Ahmad Jamal’s first recording with a large orchestra including strings. It was actually a studio date made by the trio at the Nola Penthouse Studios in New York (hence the title) with a tightly arranged string orchestra conducted by Joe Kennedy. In December of 1962 Jamal would return to that format, backed this time by an orchestra conducted by Richard Evans (aka Richard Lee Cowan Evans). The results would be released on the album presented here, Macanudo (Argo LPS-712). Nearly all of the band members are unknown. The original linernotes spoke of “jazz greats and conservatorytrained musicians from the New York Philharmonic and other symphony orchestras”, but the only confirmed player apart from Jamal and conductor Richard Evans is bassist Art Davis, listed by the Tom Lord discography but not mentioned on the original LP’s back cover. Bassist, composer, arranger and producer, Richard Evans is best known for his work in the latter two capacities for Cadet Records during the 1960s and early 1970s, working with artists like Ramsey Lewis, Marlena Shaw and Dorothy Ashby. In the same period he also formed “The Soulful Strings” with whom he recorded several albums. In the 1970s and 1980s he worked as bassist and arranger with artists such as Natalie Cole, Peabo Bryson and Ahmad Jamal. Currently he serves as a music professor in Boston. For a brief period in the late 50s he was a member of Sun Ra’s Arkestra, playing on the early Ra album Sun Ra - Jazz by Sun Ra Vol. 1. Macanudo consisted of a thematic suite composed by Evans, which was inspired by Latin American music and rhythms. Jamal would never record any of these pieces again, with the sole exception of “Haitian Market Place”, which he would include on his 1963 trio album Naked City Theme (that version has been added here as a bonus), and “Bogotá”, which he performed numerous times in his live concerts.
