Despite a lack of any major hits, Johnny “Guitar” Watson has long been recognized by people in the know as one of the true geniuses of blues and R&B. This set is a long overdue tribute to a visionary pioneer. A truly multi-talented artist, he was a blazing boogie-woogie pianist, though he is best remembered as an innovative guitarist who influenced Bo Diddley and Ike Turner in the instrument-as-noisemaker department (1954’s “Space Guitar"). Some sources claim he was the first guitarist to use reverb and feedback to make music and his guitar playing tapped the full range of the instrument’s potential. Watson was also a prolific songwriter and a soulful singer, who was both uptown and as gutbucket as you could possibly ask for. His singing was by turns sexy, humorous, and political. This quintessential collection gathers a variety of the great R&B recordings and hard to find blues sides he made for different labels such as Federal, Modern, Keen, RPM, Class and Arvee Records between 1952 and 1960. This is the material upon which Johnny Guitar Watson's reputation was built.
“There are few more lascivious sounds in popular music than the voice of Johnny ‘Guitar’ Watson.” - The New York Times “Watson understood low down blues and be-bop jazz and came up with his own melding of it.” - Cub Koda.
Recorded in Los Angeles (California), between 1952 and 1960.
