4 1/2 STARS ALL MUSIC GUIDE

This release contains all studio recordings made by the great Miles Davis for the Blue Note label as a leader. He would only return to that label in 1958, when he participated on Cannonball Adderley’s album Somethin’ Else. The master takes from the three sessions originally appeared on three consecutive LPs, Young Man with a Horn (BLP 5013), Miles Davis Vol.2 (BLP 5022), and Miles Davis Vol.3 (BLP 5040), with further takes appearing on Enigma (BLP5071). Miles is backed on these sides by such jazz masters as J. J. Johnson, Jimmy Heath, Jackie McLean, Horace Silver, Percy Heath, Oscar Pettiford, and Art Blakey, among others. As a bonus, different versions of “Donna” and “Yesterdays” recorded by Miles for Prestige during the same period, as well as two complete Birdland broadcasts featuring a group similar to those on the Blue Note sessions, and also featuring Jackie McLean and Gil Coggins.
