BRILLIANT NEVER BEFORE RELEASED JAZZ PERFORMANCES ON THE NEDERLANDS JAZZ ARCHIEF LABEL

PRESENTING BYAS PLAYING IN A QUARTET FORMAT IN HIS ONLY EXISTING RECORDINGS WITH DUTCH PIANIST PIM JACOBS.

INCLUDES BYAS' ONLY KNOWN VERSION OF "ON GREEN DOLPHIN STREET".

This newly appeared CD presents a complete never-before-heard quartet performance by the unforgettable Don Byas, backed by Dutch players in a set taped live at the Rembrandttheater, in Haarlem, Netherlands, on July 4, 1964. Byas is accompanied by the brilliant pianist Pim Jacobs (1934-1996), Pim's brother Ruud Jacobs on bass, and John Engels on drums. This are the only existing recording of Byas with Pim Jacobs. The show, recorded in crystal-clear sound quality, consists of a selection of well-known standards, many of which are related to Charlie Parker and to Byas' own role as one of the first legends of bebop, "On Green Dolphin Street" (in his only existing version of the tune by Byas), the poignant Benny Golson ballad "I Remember Clifford", Charlie Parker's "Billie's Bounce", "Don't Blame Me" (a ballad memorably recorded by Parker on Dial), Tadd Dameron's "Lady Bird", Dizzy Gillespie's "Groovin' High" (first recorded by Byas with Bird and Diz in the legendary 1945 Town Hall concert), a delightful "Moonlight in Vermont", and the closing "Indiana".
