Dot Time in association with the Louis Armstrong House in Corona, Queens, present a series of never before heard recordings by the great Louis Armstrong remastered from the original sources.

The first volume, titled THE STANDARD OIL SESSIONS, presents Louis in San Francisco in 1950 in the usual company of two of his best-ever All Stars members: Earl Hines on piano, and Jack Teagarden on trombone. The recordings, which present excellent sound quality for its time, come from a show waxed to be issued on the radio but never broadcasted. The original discs then went into Louis' possession and there they stayed until now, when they are presented on this fascinating Dot release.  Louis, Earl and Jack are backed by and odd rhythm section consisting of the obscure Lyle Johnson on clarinet (he never recorded again with Louis or, according to the Tom Lord discography, with anybody! and Clarence Hayes on guitar (he is also one of the announcers interviewing the players between tracks). While the Dot issue states the bassist and the drummer are unknown, Tom Lord says Arvell Shaw is on bass, and Cozy Cole on drums, which makes sense both being All Stars members at the time. Of course, Barney Bigard was the group’s official clarinetist at the time, so Lyle's presence is not explained. He was probably a last-minute local replacement. In any case, the focus here is on Louis, Earl and Jack's playing, and while the repertoire in itself presents no big news, the playing is wonderfully relaxed. A delightful first volume that keeps us waiting for more!
