By the time "The Swinging Side of Nat “King” Cole" (also issued as "Welcome Nto the Club") was recorded, Nat King Cole was already recognized by the general public as more of a singer and entertainer than a jazz pianist.

"The Swinging Side of Nat “King” Cole" presents the leader backed by a big band, but not any band. For this project, the accompanying musicians are none other than the Count Basie Orchestra (minus Basie, who due to contractual reasons had to be replaced by pianist Gerald Wiggins). This album marks the only collaboration between the Basie band and Nat King Cole, making it a truly interesting work to listen to.
