France’s biggest rock star, and one of its most colorful cultural icons, the great Johnny Hallyday is a national legend. Johnny’s sense of rock & roll style, with all its rebellious trappings, was impeccable, and his legacy still remains undeniably electric.
This collector’s LP edition includes a number of Hallyday’s most iconic songs from his early years, when he gained fame as France’s answer to Elvis Presley and the other fabulous rock legends of the ‘50s. All of these titles were originally released in France by the Vogue and Philips labels between 1960 and 1962. They consist of some original compositions by Hallyday as well as French adaptations of rock & roll hits of that era.
Highlights include “L’idole des jeunes,” “Pas cette chanson,” and the joyful hit “Viens danser le twist” (all three songs climbed to #1 on the French charts). Other gems are Hallyday’s original tunes “Tu m’plais,” and “Laisse les filles,” plus celebrated numbers such as “À New Orléans,” Joe Jones’ “You Talk Too Much” (translated into French as “Tu parles trop”), Charles Aznavour’s “Retiens la nuit,” Adriano Celentano’s smash “24.000 baisers,” and the excellent “Souvenirs, souvenirs” (widely regarded as a classic of French rock). The 1958 Jerry Lee Lewis hit “High School Confidential” is also covered here (translated into French as “Nous quand on s’embrasse”).
A versatile vocalist, Hallyday’s inviting style lent itself to edgy rock & roll, danceable twist and romantic ballads. This is an essential set for listeners who want to hear the early sounds of Johnny Hallyday.
