Stay With Me (Verve MGV-8302) comes from a 1955 session that only produced the seven songs on the album, without any additional tunes or alternate takes. The original pianist scheduled for the date was Carl Drinkard, but he argued with the singer and with bassist Leonard Gaskin at the last minute, and was fi red. Drummer Jo Jones was present at the date (although he didn’t play, as the drummer on all of the tracks was Cozy Cole), and he urgently called Billy Taylor as a replacement. Recorded for Norman Granz, this date produced some of the best music Billie made during the later stage of her career.
