Few music tycoons have had as lasting an effect on popular culture as entrepreneur and Motown founder Berry Gordy, whose accomplishments have earned him the Pioneer Award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Gordy founded Tamla Records in Detroit in 1959, which grew into Motown. He drew from different musical genres, including R&B, soul, blues, and doo-wop, to build the label into a music empire that would launch the careers of such important stars as The Supremes, Stevie Wonder, The Temptations, Marvin Gaye,and Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, among many others.

This quintessential collector’s edition includes Berry Gordy’s most essential and enduring works from the beginning of his career, gathering a variety of the great sides he wrote (and mostly produced) for Tamla-Motown, and some of its subsidiary labels such as Miracle, Gordy and Mel-o-dy, between 1959 and 1962. Included here are classics like The Miracles’ “Shop Around”, The Marvelettes’ “I Want a Guy”, Barrett Strong’s “Money”, and Mary Wells’ “I Don’t Want to Take a Chance”, to name a few. Our release also contains lesser-heard tracks which are just as enjoyable as the hits. All of this material represents a formidable slice of American popular culture and allows you to experience some of the finest gems of the soul genre.
