Having such stars as Coleman Hawkins, Don Byas, Roy Eldridge, Benny Carter, Lalo Schifrin, Jo Jones, Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz and J. J. Johnson playing on the same night may have been taken from granted in 1960, when Norman Granz presented this Jazz at the Philharmonic concert live at Amsterdam's Concertgebouw on November 19. But now, with nearly all of those stars gone (Schifrin is the only one still among us, 86 at the time of this writing), the pure magic they produced on stage can be appreciated on a different light and this never before heard performance is thus highly welcomed.
The rhythm section of Schifrin and Art Davis, with Jo Jones and Chuck Lampkin alternating on drums, backs the whole 75-minute performance, with the first half focusing on Hawkins, Byas, Eldridge and Carter, and the second one presenting Gillespie, Getz, Johnson and Leo Wright, who was perhaps less of a star than the other players, but was nevertheless an outstanding soloist.
The program, in crystal-clear sound quality, includes a long reading of "Take the A Train" by the swing masters, followed by the usual "Ballad Medley" and the spirited "Stoned". The modern jazz players offer versions of Duke Ellington's "The Mooche", and Dizzy's "Kush" (on which Candido Camero is added on conga) and "Wheatleigh Hall".
The CD comes with a splendid 16-page booklet filled with rare photographs and press ads from the actual concert and interesting liner notes by jazz journalist Bert Vuijsje.
