Legendary guitarist, gifted songwriter, master of rhythm, snappy dresser… Bo Diddley (AKA “The Originator”) was all of these things and more. Diddley surprised the music world in the mid-1950s when he unleashed a new guitar sound dominated by heavy rhythmic drive and distortion, which was quickly absorbed by other players. He called his syncopated groove a “freight train sound,” while others described it as a “shaveand- a-haircut rhythm.” The beat had been around for centuries, most notably in West African drumming, but Diddley mastered it and augmented it for the rock & roll era.

Long unavailable on vinyl, this quintessential collector’s edition includes his third album, Have Guitar, Will Travel (1959), which offers a great introduction into this man's special brand of musical innovation. This LP marks a real hit-making stretch for Checker Records during Diddley’searly years; containing such important classics as “Cops and Robbers,” “Run Diddley Daddy,” and “Mona (I Need You Baby).” More than one British Invasion band learned what they needed to know about American rock & roll from the songs on this record (The Rolling Stones cut “Cops and Robbers” at their earliest recording session, and later released a killer version of “Mona”). This record is every bit as raunchy as Diddley's first two albums (the guitars may even be crunchier, and the singing shows more range). This is also the album that began the funny cover photos on Diddley’s records.

In addition to this sensational LP, we have included 2 bonus tracks consisting of hard to find sides from the same period. Between hypnotic and rhythmic guitar lines, swaggering vocals, hot numbers and solid instrumentals, all of these songs serve up a young Bo Diddley at his raw and primal best, and confirm that from the onset of his career Diddley didn't sound like anyone else in rock & roll. Enjoy it!
