One of the greatest singing brother duos of all time, The Everly Brothers’ close harmonies became one of the most identifiable sounds of the late 1950s and early 1960s. They set unmatched standards for close harmony, and infused rock & roll with some of the best elements of country. Don and Phil Everly sang of young love with a heart-rending yearning and compelling melodies. The harmonies owed audible debts to the Appalachian tradition, but were imbued with a keen modern pop sensibility that made them more accessible without sacrificing any power or beauty.
Long unavailable on vinyl, this quintessential collector’s edition includes The Everly Brothers’ second LP, It’s Everly Time, originally released by Warner Brothers in 1960 (after the brothers left the Cadence label). Here the duo enjoys a top-notch support team of producer Archie Bleyer, and great Nashville session players like Chet Atkins, Floyd Cramer, James Clayton, and Buddy Harman, Jr., among others. This album saw the pair stretch out from the Everlystraditional pop base. Most of the songs also had that country feel heard in their self-titled debut, but this time infused with a distinct Everly Brothers flavor. There is not a weak song among the 12 tracks, most of which are barely known outside of serious Everly fans. The album includes six stellar contributions by the brilliant song-writing husband and wife team of Boudleaux and Felice Bryant, one of Don Everly’s best compositions (“So Sad”), and incredible harmony singing throughout. In addition, we have included 4 bonus tracks from the same period.
The Everly Brothers will always be remembered as prototype rootslevel rock & rollers. Their timeless music remains as pertinent today as the day it was recorded.
