Wanda Jackson’s influence is massive, spreading far beyond her gender and her heyday of the ‘50s & ‘60s. She was the female equivalent of Elvis Presley, who incited the nation with his leather suits and pelvic thrusting. Jackson was the first woman to bring sex appeal to the rock & roll scene. The stage was her kingdom, and even today she rules it with an aggressive style and signature growl, which continues to excite thousand of listeners.

Long unavailable on vinyl, this quintessential collector’s edition includes Jackson’s self-titled debut LP, Wanda Jackson, originally released in 1958. Her first album for Capitol shows just how versatile she could be, singing a wide array from traditional American tunes to pop. This is a great mix of rural-rooted country music and first-generation rockabilly. Wanda was also the first country singer to bring a more glamorous style to her stage image, thanks to her mother's handmade flashy stage costumes. Her debut LP, recorded in Hollywood, California, showcased her country side, including covers of Kitty Wells (“Making Believe”) and Jim Reeves (“Just Call Me Lonesome”). She tackled everything from an early Don Everly ballad (“Here We Are Again”), to top-40 (“Happy Happy Birthday”, a hit for the Tune Weavers) and sophisticated standards (“Let Me Go Lover”, previously waxed by Peggy Lee). She turned uptempo for a trio of scorchers, including a pair of ‘50s standards (“Long Tall Sally” and “Money Honey”), and the incendiary anthem, “Let’s Have a Party”.

In addition to this sensational LP, we have included 4 bonus tracks from the same period. This great material represents the cream of the crop from Jackson’s hitmaking stretch for the Capitol label during her most inspired years. All of these original gems –which have been brilliantly remastered to achieve the most pristine sound– are simple two-and-a-half-minute songs that convey all the sheer power and emotion of rock & roll.
