This collector’s edition includes The Marvelettes’ sensational third album, Playboy (recorded at Hitsville studios, Detroit, and originally released by Tamla Records in 1962), which was long unavailable on vinyl. It is such a strong LP that all of the songs could have been issued as singles. In the end, six of the tunes did appear on Tamla as singles, including the title track. The album contains outstanding songs like the ballads “I Think I Can Change You,” and “Forever”; the driving mid-tempo R&B rocker“Mix It Up”; and the superb “Someday, Someway”. The group had built on the success of their first two albums, and by this time Motown had honed their mastery of the girl group as a medium for high-quality commercial pop music. The Marvelettes, and with them the foundations for Motown as we know it, had now truly arrived.

In addition to the original masterpiece, this WaxTime collector’s edition includes 4 bonus tracks from the same period, consisting of R&B highlights like “Good Luck Charm”, as well as classic numbers from Motown’s golden era such as “The One Who Really Loves You”.
