Sony’s new 3-CD deluxe Collector’s Edition (there’s also a cheaper 2-CD Legacy Edition) includes the original LP mix of the album (which hasn’t been available for years) along with a live CD and DVD, plus a 180gm vinyl copy. There’s also some interesting studio material – two previously unissued alternate versions of Spanish Key and John McLaughlin, along with 45 edits of several cuts, including the single version of Miles Runs The Voodoo Dow

The live CD – an August 1970 recording of Miles leading a septet at Tanglewood in Lenox, Massachusetts – is stupendous and includes a great version of Directions. The live DVD, recorded in Copenhagen in November 1969, finds Miles’ band in a looser, more experimental mode, with Chick Corea and Wayne Shorter leading the band into the realms of free jazz.
