Mingus' Black Saint and the Sinner Lady is considered a cult classic among jazz critics and the pinnacle of its genre, a worthy competitor to albums such as Bitches Brew and A Love Supreme. The album is frequently regarded to as one of the greatest albums of all time.

Black Saint fuses soft jazz with ethnic sounds of African culture, as well as indigenous tribal music and grand folk-dance. The album was pivotal for its target sub-genre, a fusion of jazz and classical known as third stream.

Each track on the album is an extension of the other – all were originally written as live ballads, composed and fine tuned into recordings.
