Although seemingly impossible to comprehend, this landmark jazz date made in 1960 was recorded in less than three days, during several marathon sessions that produced still more music that would later be issued on subsequent albums: Coltrane Plays the Blues, Coltrane’s Sound, and Coltrane Legacy.

My Favorite Things was a remarkable success for both Trane and the soprano sax. The swaying waltz rhythm is hypnotic, and the exotic sound of the soprano sax, haunting. “But Not for Me” would only remain in Coltrane’s repertoire for a short time. The same can be said of “Summertime”. Both “My Favorite Things” and “Every Time We Say Goodbye” became regular numbers in Trane’s concert repertoire.

John Coltrane was a regular attraction at the Newport Jazz Festival. He performed there for years beginning with his appearance as a member of Miles Davis’ Sextet with Cannonball Adderley, Bill Evans, Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb on July 3, 1958. His Newport debut as a leader took place on July 1, 1961. Coltrane played three tunes (“Impressions”, “Naima” and “My Favorite Things”) that he had recently recorded for Atlantic.
