Etta James’ powerful, versatile and emotionally direct voice could enliven the raunchiest blues as well as the subtlest love songs. She was one of the most iconic soul singers, with a career that lasted decades. James was as comfortable carrying subtle melodies as she was exploring the more raucous side of the blues. Presented here is her debut album, At Last!, released in 1960 by the Chess Records’ subsidiary Argo label.

Another classic album by the singer, The Second Time Around, has been added here as a bonus, as well as seven extra tracks gathering a variety of those great hard to find sides she recorded for different labels, such as Modern, Kent, Chess and Crown Records, between 1955 and 1958. The songs contained here are the cream of the crop from Etta’s early years. Without a doubt, this is the material upon which her kingdom was built.
