Arturo O’Farrill is best known for his larger band ensembles, particularly of the Latinized flavor. Here, he makes a few personnel changes and goes completely solo, giving an intimate performance of some originals and heartfelt covers. He touches on all parts of his home and musical heritage, performing pieces that come from Ireland (“Oh Danny Boy”-it is “O” Farrill, after all) as well as some romantic material from Cuba (“Siboney”). A cozy reading of overlooked composer Stephen Foster produces a relaxed “O Susanna” while a Jarrett-esque touch is evident on the sweeping “The Delusion of the Greedy.” His musical loyalty is evidenced on a tribute to Randy Weston (“Little Niles”) and Charles Mingus (“Jelly Roll”), the latter delivered in gloriously rich rag time. A penetrating and insightful look into the mind and soul of an important artist.
