Located in London's Soho district, Ronnie Scott's club was founded in October 1959 by British tenor sax players Ronnie Scott and Pete King. During its nearly fifty year existence (it is still open), it received some of the most important American and European jazz figures. Among its guests were Johnny Griffin, Roland Kirk, Al Cohn, Stan Getz, Ben Webster, Benny Golson, Wes Montgomery, Freddie Hubbard, Donald Byrd and, of course, Bill Evans. The French jazz critic and enthusiast Francis Paudras, who played such a fundamental role in the life of pianist Bud Powell, was present during Evans' performances at the club. "As early as 1969", he remembered later, "Ronnie Scott's club in London had regular appearances by the Bill Evans Trio, appearances that both recent initiates and ardent long-time followers would never have dreamt of missing. Bill's nights at Ronnie Scott's were always magnificent.

Bill always loved being back in that hearty place, and the quality of those audiences must have greatly contributed to the musical success of these memorable evenings... This music recorded on July 21st, 1980 can be viewed as his musical testament, since Bill was to leave this world one month later. All night long, music burst out, like fireworks making some kind of apotheosis for this group that played so well together. Anyway, didn't Bill used to say that this trio with Marc Johnson and Joe LaBarbera was strangely similar to the first one with Scott Lafaro and Paul Motian? This brilliant music was actually the product of a partnership ruled by love and respect. With a foremost and golden rule: being tuned into others... The last night on August 2nd, 1980 was electrical as well as passionate. It came as a musical consecration for two wonderful weeks at Ronnie Scott's. Marc Johnson, a musician to the core who had always been in love with Bill Evans' work reached a state of osmosis with the pianist's creation."
