This release contains the complete 1961 original album New Ideas (New Jazz NJLP8257), Don Ellis’ third album as a leader, on which he is the only horn backed by Al Francis on vibes, Jaki Byard on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Charlie Persip on drums. An extremely rare 1958 version of “It Don’t Mean a Thing” pairing Ellis with Zoot Sims in a quintet format, has been added as a bonus.
