Throughout his illustrious career Jimmy Giuffre remained a true innovator. From creating the timeless ‘Four Brothers' Sound with Woody Herman to his many acoustic trios which both anticipated and influenced the ECM genre, multi-saxist Giuffre has always been a genuine frontrunner.
Here's just one of the many reasons: Swamp People'comprises the most adventurous juncture in Giuffre's constant search for a new approach to familiar themes. Indeed, of all the groups Jimmy Giuffre fronted, this was, by far, the most unique in that it featured Giuffre on saxes and clarinet, Bob Brookmeyer's signature sounding valve trombone and guitarist Jim Hall. And, it was this swinging threesome that famously performed the evocative jazz hit ‘The Train And The River' in the movie ‘Jazz On A Summer's Day' and is included here. It was ‘The Train And The River' that set the tone for what Giuffre described as the trio's seductive blend of 'blues-based folk jazz.'
