This release presents the complete original LP Gerry Mulligan and the Concert Jazz Band at the Village Vanguard (Verve V6-8396). It was the first live album released by this extraordinary Mulligan big band formation, which featured such distinguished musicians as Bob Brookmeyer, Conte Candoli Gene Quill, Mel Lewis, and of course Mulligan himself. As a bonus, another complete LP by the same band, Gerry Mulligan Presents a Concert in Jazz (Verve V6-8415), which was recorded at Webster Hall in studio conditions (with no audience present) the following year. The latter album contains fascinating arrangements of George Russell’s “All About Rosie” and Johnny Carisi’s “Israel” penned by their composers for these outstanding dates.
