To celebrate his 80th birthday, Johnny Griffin played for two evenings at Ronnie Scott’s Club last May with this All-star line-up. Sadly, the engagement proved to be Johnny’s last UK appearance.
He died just two months later - on July 25th - at his home in Availles Limouzine, France.
In + Out Records had the great good fortune to record those Scott Club sessions, which were highly acclaimed in the media.
The album contains stimulating versions of Griffin favourites like When We Were One, The JAMF’s Are Coming and Hot Sake, plus a moving original, penned in tribute to the Little Giant by Roy Hargrove and titled Mentor.
This precious recording - with notes written by Orrin Keepnews, who produced many of the Little Giant’s memorable albums - is now available.
