This release contains two complete Gerry Mulligan small group albums Jeru (Columbia CSP JC58732), taped in 1962, presents Mulligan in an unusual setting as the only horn backed by a regular piano-bass-drums rhythm section plus congas. He is accompanied here by drummer Dave Bailey, bassist Ben Tucker, conga drummer Alec Dorsey, and the great pianist Tommy Flanagan. The LP marks the latter musician’s only existing collaboration with Mulligan. Recorded in 1958-59, What Is There to Say? (Columbia CS8116) showcases the saxophonist in one of his regular piano-less quartets, with Art Farmer on trumpet, Bill Crow on bass, and Dave Bailey on drums again.
