4 STARS ALL MUSIC GUIDE
One of the most sensual singers in the history of jazz and popular music, Julie London’s (September 26, 1926-October 28, 2000) risqué album covers were as much a part of her legend as her sultry and husky vocals.
This release presents one of her many thematic LPs, Around Midnight (Liberty LST7164), which is a collection of songs evoking nighttime. An original song by Bobby Troup, “Lonely in Paris”, is included among well known standards like Thelonious Monk’s great “’Round Midnight” (with lyrics by Bernie Hanighen), Erroll Garner’s “Misty”, George & Ira Gershwin’s “But Not For Me”, and Billy Strayhorn’s “Lush Life”. “How About Me?”, even if not the better known of Irving Berlin’s compositions, had been recorded by Ella Fitzgerald in 1958 on her Irving Berlin Songbook.
