In October 1957, Count Basie recorded the album E=MC2, also known as The Atomic Mr. Basie. It became one of the top-hit LPs by the Basie band and featured splendid arrangements and compositions by Neal Hefti (1922-2008), who had been working for the band since 1950. The release of this album in late 1957 marked the beginning of a glorious new phase in Count Basie’s career. Given the album’s success, the Basie-Hefti formula was retried in April of 1958, when Basie plays Hefti was recorded. Count Basie and Neal Hefti’s paths would only cross again for a final album together, recorded in November of 1962 and presented here: On My Way and Shoutin’ Again (all of the LP’s compositions and arrangements were penned by Hefti). While none of these selections is as famous as his songs like “Cute”, “Little Pony”, “Splanky”, “Li’l Darlin”, and “Repetition”, the substantial originality of this music is hard to deny, not to mention that the expert musicians playing his music bring these tracks fully to life in a livelier fashion than most laid-back Basie studio sessions. On My Way and Shoutin’ Again was the result of a three-day group of sessions which produced no extra material or preserved alternate takes.
