Gearbox Records offers up yet another lost classic of British jazz. The Ronnie Scott Quintet and Phil Seamen Quintet play for a live BBC "Jazz Club 45" session in 1956, hosted by David Jacobs, at the BBC Studios in London, on this first ever commercial release of the two bands. The two groups heard offer varying approaches, with Ronnie Scott's Quintet appearing like a faithful echo of the recent Clifford Brown-Max Roach group, with its archetypal trumpet and tenor saxophone front line, the very crux of hard bop. Phil Seamen's Quintet offers an oddly mixed contrast, creating music that has virility as an asset on the one hand and - at times - quaintness as a debit on the other. This recording is a welcome reminder of these ten musicians youthful talents, from an era when such strong musical charisma was audible at the turn of a dial. Curated, analogue mastered and cut with care at Gearbox Studio.
