Dinah Washington (1924-1963) recorded many albums for EmArcy, and during the period 1954-1961 she collaborated on numerous sessions with conductor Harold “Hal” Mooney (1911-1995). After years of freelancing, Mooney finally signed an exclusive contract in 1956, becoming the in-house arranger and A&R director at Mercury Records, where he would remain until the late 1960s. There, he provided arrangements for many top singers, including Sarah Vaughan, Dinah Washington, Helen Merrill, Ernestine Anderson and, on Mercury’s parent label, Philips Records, Nina Simone. Mooney was described as a “nuts andbolts arranger” by fellow chart writer Billy May. It was meant as a compliment, and Mooney’s versatility can be characterized by some of the more notable arrangements he wrote at the Mercury stable. Mooney’s numerous arrangements for Dinah Washington ranged from straight big band swing, through Latin mambo to rhythm and blues. On In the Land of Hi-Fi, they are also joined by jazz stars Cannonball Adderley and Junior Mance. Framed by Hal Mooney’s mix of stringladen arrangements and big-band charts, Washington imparts both tenderness and passion to slow numbers like “I’ve Got a Crush on You” and “Say It Isn’t So”, while getting into some charged vocal buildups on swingers like “Our Love Is Here to Stay” and “If I Were a Bell”. In addition to the gospel-imbued number “There’ll Be a Jubilee”, Latin-tinged cuts like the beautiful bolero-style “Let Me Love You” and the lounge mambo “Nothing Ever Changes My Love for You” provide nice contrast to this jazz and pop set.
