Duke Ellington's compositions are a world in themselves and still invite compentent jazz performers to explore their infinte possibilities.
Pianist ROGER KELLAWAY and clarinetist EDDIE DANIELS, backed just by cellist JAMES HOLLAND, have chosen eight well known Dukish tunes to perform DUKE AT THE ROADHOUSE, recorded live during a 2012 concert in Santa Fe, Mexico.
Even if these tunes have been played and recorded hundreds of times, Kellaway and Daniels let them preserve their freshness without turning them unrecognizable. In fact, melodies are beautifully and delicately played, and improvisations are always kept in an intimate mood that pervades the whole CD, which is completed by two nice tribute pieces to Duke: Daniels' "Duke at the Roadhouse", and Kellaway's "Duke in Ojai".
The trio achieves a beautiful sound, and the presence of the cello seems highly appropiate for these tunes. Daniels doubles on tenor saxophone, and on both reeds he gets a sensitive and moving sound. Kellaway plays good solos and is an exquisite accompanist.
And what to say about the Ellington tunes? This is like a date with old friends which are always rejuvenating and never cease to have important things to say.
