Ethan Iverson

Ethan Iverson has listened to Ron Carter as long as he’s been listening to jazz. He has written about Carter frequently on his well-respected jazz blog Do The Math and is quoted several times in Carter’s biography Finding the Right Notes.

This is a collaboration between two of the most innovative and contemporary musicians in jazz and one of the music's most prolific and traditional bassists. Nasheet Waits is, perhaps, the common ground where Ethan Iverson and Ron Carter meet and the trio gets its solid and round sound, because he represents the avant-garde as well as swing.

Beyond being a refreshing collaboration of jazz musicians from different eras, this album’s performance is the work of three superb musicians delivering an hour of exciting and accessible music. Criss Cross records are always a level playing field, with everyone recording in the same studio in a single day, hence the sporting title, 'The Purity of the Turf. '

The repertoire is mostly originals and jazz classics. Highlights are a great Horace Silver’s ‘Song For My Father’ and a surprising solo piano tribute to the late Paul Bley in Anette Peacock’s "So Hard it Hurts".
