This release presents he complete album Gerry Mulligan Meets Johnny Hodges (Verve MGV 8367), which was the only collaborative small group recording ever made by these two sax giants. Apart from this session, their only recordings together were a pair of sets where Mulligan joined the Ellington orchestra. As a bonus, the complete album What Is There to Say? (Columbia CS1307) one of the best efforts by Mulligan's celebrated piano-less quartet with Farmer.

“This is the kind of session about which critical comment is a waste of space. The two men blend just the way you would expect a rabbit to blend with a carrot-top. Casual, unostentatious music that belongs irrevocably to the past, present and future of jazz. (Leonard Feather)
