Contained here is the complete original Charles Mingus LP "Oh Yeah" (Atlantic SD-1377). It presents a unique formation of Mingus’ group of that time, the Jazz Workshop, with Rahsaan Roland Kirk in one of his only three recorded collaborations with Mingus. Chronologically, they were first taped together on October 21, 1961, during a Birdland broadcast privately recorded by Boris Rose (which consisted of a tune titled “Nouroog”, an alternate version of “Ecclusiastics”, and an incomplete reading of “Hog Callin’ Blues”). Their next conjunct recordings are the ones presented here from Mingus’ album Oh Yeah. Finally, their last recorded collaboration was taped live by Atlantic on January 19, 1974, at Carnegie Hall. However, it remains for the most part, unissued. Only two songs from the latter event, extended versions of “Perdido” and “C Jam Blues,” appeared on Mingus at Carnegie Hall (Atlantic SD1667), while readings of “Peggy’s Blue Skylight,” “Celia,” “Fables of Faubus,” “Big Alice,” and a coda to “C Jam Blues” remain lost in the vaults to this day.
