An essential figure in the fusion between jazz and bossa nova, pianist and composer Sérgio Mendes (age 76 at this writing) has over 55 releases under his own name. He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2012 for “Real in Rio” from the animated film Rio.

This release presents the complete original album "Dance Moderno" (Philips [Brazil] P630.491L), which was Sérgio Mendes’ first LP as a leader. It is followed by a full session by Mendes’ sextet with celebrated jazz flutist Herbie Mann. Also included here are three tracks featuring the same group with the great Cannonball Adderley (consisting of the perennial “Corcovado”, and two different readings of tunes he also recorded with Herbie Mann, among them his own composition “Groovy Samba”). Mendes’ Sextet’s feature at a 1962 Carnegie Hall concert, “Samba de uma nota só”, closes this fascinating CD.
