This essential LP edition includes one of Solomon Burke’s finest albums, the splendid If You Need Me. Originally released by Atlantic Records, and long unavailable on vinyl, this long play contains 12 songs recorded between 1959 and 1962. It is named for the opening cut, Solomon’s take on Wilson Pickett’s “If You Need Me,” which was a Bsuccessful single for Burke, who sent the song to number two on the R&B charts.

These mostly mid-tempo songs find Burke’s gritty pleas at home in sultry, bluesy Bsurroundings (“Send Me Some Loving”) and sweetened up for the occasional exoticatinged arrangement (“Tonight My Heart She Is Crying”). In addition to the original masterpiece, this Vinyl Lover’s collector’s edition includes 2 bonus tracks, from the Bsame period: “Gotta Travel On” and “Looking for My Baby”. This is the material upon which Solomon Burke’s legend was built. It is enduring music and the epitome of southern soul up north.
