Recorded in 1957, "Candy" marks Lee Morgan’s only album taped entirely in a quartet format. Primarily known as one of the key hard bop musicians of the 1960s, Morgan came to prominence in his late teens, recording on John Coltrane’s Blue Train (also taped in 1957) and with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers before launching his solo career. Morgan stayed with Blakey until 1961 and started to record as a leader soon after.

The other star in "Candy" is pianist Sonny Clark. Another talented artist who disappeared before his time, Clark died of a heroin overdose in New York on January 13, 1963, at the age of 31. Even though he left behind an impressive musical legacy, it is a shame that he was unable to fulfill his full potential. “Easy Living”, the only quartet track from Morgan’s otherwise quintet LP "Expoobident" (Vee Jay SR 3015), has been added here as a bonus.
