Through the gospel-impassioned fury of his vocals and the complex polyrhythms of his beats, James Brown became the single most important figure in the transformation of rhythm & blues into SOUL music. This quintessential collector’s edition includes two seminal albums by James Brown & The Famous Flames that were long out of print: Tell Me What You’re Gonna Do (1961) and Shout and Shimmy (1962). These masterpieces helped define the primal nature of soul. They offer a solid introduction into this man's special brand of musical feeling, his own passionate style, intense delivery and R&B innovation. The foot-tapping rhythms, spine-tingling stylings and sentimental mood renderings so typical of his early performances can all be heard here. This is the material upon which James Brown’s kingdom was built. The exact same takes of “I Don’t Mind”, “Come Over Here”, “Love Don’t Love Nobody”, “Dancin’ Little Thing”, “You Don’t Have To Go”, and “Tell Me What You’re Gonna Do”, originally appeared on both Tell Me What You’re Gonna Do (Ember, 1961) and Shout and Shimmy (King, 1962), but are obviously not repeated here. Instead, this edition contains 9 bonus tracks from the same period, which weren’t included on either album.

“His up-tempo numbers illuminate the Georgia native’s trademark baritone, while his ballads are impressively as smooth as silk.” – Craig Lytle (AMG)
