One of jazz music’s great explorers, Lloyd McNeill’s multi-disciplinary career took in stints in painting, poetry and photography, alongside a professorship of music anthropology. His travels and residencies across Europe, Brazil and West Africa led to friendships with Picasso, Nina Simone, Dom Salvador and Naná Vasconcelos.

His recordings, few in number and often privately pressed, have become hugely collectable in recent years. Given a welcome re-press by Soul Jazz, Washington Suite was originally commissioned as a piece of music for the Capitol Ballet Company in Washington, DC, and issued on his own Asha record label in 1970.
