4 STARS ALL MUSIC GUIDE
Starting in 1977 and continuing into the mid-1980s, guitarist Doug Raney's career was extensively documented by the SteepleChase label. Influenced by his father Doug Raney, Tal Farlow, and Jim Hall, Raney pretty much had his style together from the start, so his evolution since the beginning is pretty logical. This quintet outing matches Raney with a European quintet whose best-known members are tenor saxophonist Bernt Rosengren and bassist Jesper Lundgaard. Raney performs two originals (including "Walking the Duck"), "Theme for Ernie" and numbers by Benny Golson, John Coltrane and Sam Rivers ("Beatrice"). Excellent modern mainstream straight-ahead jazz.
