Alto saxophonist Paul Desmond—best known for his work with the Dave Brubeck Quartet—and guitarist Jim Hall had a fruitful musical relationship. First Place Again (Warner Bros W-1356), recorded in 1959 in a quartet format along with Modern Jazz Quartet members Percy Heath and Connie Kay, and released the following year, was the album that started off their collaboration, which wouldcontinue, on and off, up until 1975, that is two years before Desmond’s untimely death at the age of 52. N“Susie,” recorded during the same sessions but not included on the original LP, as well as fi ve further quartet tracks from later dates, have been added here as a bonus.
