When asked in a 1960 radio interview which was his favorite of all the albums he recorded up to that point, John Coltrane was quick to reply: "Blue Train". Presented here is Coltrane’s complete 1957 LP "Blue Train" (Blue Note BLP1577), which was also the first on which the saxophonist was given the opportunity to select his own sidemen for a date. Also included is the classic "Giant Steps" (Atlantic SD1311), one of Coltrane’s best albums, containing his first versions of such outstanding compositionsas “Naima,”“Mr. P.C.,” and the title tune. As a bonus, this release adds Coltrane’s highly praised 1961 LP "Olé Coltrane" (Atlantic SD1373) in its entirety, as well as the only tunes by Coltrane from the LP The Best of Birdland: Volume 1 (Roulette SR 52094) and his only collaboration with fellow star tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins: “Tenor Madness.
