The label “rock & roll pioneer” can only be applied to a few musicians who were instrumental in the development of the genre during the mid-1950s. Among these giants are Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis and Little Richard. Another name that must be added to this list is Buddy Holly (born Charles Hardin Holley on September 7, 1936, in Lubbock, Texas). Even though he had only been recording for less than two years prior to his premature death (he died tragically in a plane crash, on February 3, 1959, at the tender age of 22), Holly left an impression as deep as if he had been in the business for decades.
