Not content with being a 1950s R&B star on the strength of his immortal New Orleans classic "Lawdy Miss Clawdy," singer Lloyd Price yearned for massive pop acceptance. He found it, too, with a storming rock & roll reading of the ancient blues "Stagger Lee" and the unabashedly pop-slanted "I Wish Your Picture Was You" and "Just Because." Lloyd Price recorded for some of the largest independent companies. In his wake, he left behind a large body of very fine material that was deeply imbued with his unique sound. Despite his relative anonymity today, Price directly influenced the sound of Arthur Alexander among numerous others.
The Exciting Lloyd Price is a formidable album, which contains some of the most sublime R&B music of the 20th century. Originally published in 1959 by ABC-Paramount; the label that issued his biggest smash hits, features a virtual who's who of fabulous musicians from the Crescent City scene, including Dave Bartholomew, Lee Allen, Big John Patton and Earl Palmer, among others. Recorded in absolutely breathtaking stereo sound that greatly enhances the brass-heavy arrangements, this limited LP edition is a rare find. “These songs were meant to be rock & roll hits, and they not only were, they're among the best of their kind from the late '50s.
